Crab Curry with Peanuts is my go-to recipe when I want to impress dinner guests. The combination might sound unusual, but trust me – once you try this curry, you’ll be hooked. The peanuts add an amazing texture and nutty flavor that perfectly complements the sweet crab meat. I learned this recipe from my coastal-dwelling grandmother, and it’s been a family favorite ever since.
About the Recipe
This recipe takes basic curry ingredients and adds two special touches – roasted peanuts and toddy (palm wine). The peanuts create a rich, thick gravy while adding wonderful texture. The toddy gives the curry a subtle tang that makes it different from other seafood curries. It’s perfect for both special occasions and weekend family meals.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
You’ll love how the peanuts create a unique texture in the curry sauce. The spice blend is balanced – not too hot, just flavorful. The crabs cook perfectly in the sauce, staying tender and juicy. Best of all, it’s easier to make than it looks. Even if you’re new to cooking seafood or curries, the step-by-step instructions make it simple to follow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use frozen crab for this recipe?
Yes, you can use frozen crab, but thaw it completely and drain well before cooking. Fresh crab gives better results, but frozen works fine if that’s what’s available.
What can I substitute for toddy?
If you can’t find toddy, use coconut water mixed with a splash of lime juice. This gives a similar slight tang and freshness to the curry.
Is this curry very spicy?
The spice level is moderate. You can adjust the chili powder amount to make it milder or spicier according to your taste.
How do I know when the crabs are fully cooked?
The crab meat should turn opaque and easily pull away from the shell. The shells will turn bright red when fully cooked.
