Chow Chow Pepper Kootu

Chow Chow or Chayote is a popular South Indian vegetable mainly used to make Kootus. This variation includes onions and tomatoes. And is best served with rice or as a side dish to dosa or roti.
Chow Chow Pepper Kootu

Ingredients:
Chow Chow (Chayote) – 2
Onions – 2, finely chopped
Tomatoes – 2, finely chopped
Toor Dal – 1 cup
Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
Salt as per taste

To Grind:
Coconut – 1/4 cup, grated
Peppercorns – 2 tsp
Cumin Seeds – 2 tsp

For Tempering:
Oil – 2 tsp
Mustard Seeds – 2 tsp
Urad Dal – 2 tsp
Bengal Gram Dal – 2 tsp
Dry Red Chillies – 4 to 5
Curry Leaves – few

Method:
1. Peel and dice the chow chow.
2. Pressure cook the toor dal with turmeric powder and enough water until 2-3 whistles.
3. Heat oil in a pan.
4. Fry the tempering ingredients for 30 seconds.
5. Add the onions, tomatoes and saute for a minute or two.
6. Add the chow chow and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
7. Pour 1/2 cup of water and simmer for a few minutes.
8. Add the cooked dal and salt.
9. Stir well and bring to a gentle boil.
10. Add the ground masala and stir.
11. Simmer for another minute.
12. Remove from flame.
13. Serve hot with rice.
