Hyderabad Rice Khichdi

This rice khichdi is quite popular in Hyderabad and sometimes referred to as Hyderabad Rice Khichdi.

Basmati Rice – 200 gms
Bengal Gram Dal – 50 gms
Onion – 1, sliced lengthwise
Green Chillies – 3, sliced lengthwise
Green Peas – 1/2 cup (optional)
Ghee – as required
Cashewnuts – 10
Cinnamon – 1 inch stick
Cloves – 2
Cardamom – 2
Ginger Garlic Paste – 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt as per taste
Oil as required

1. Soak the rice and dal separately for 30 to 45 minutes.
2. Heat oil in a pressure pan.
3. Fry the cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and green chillies for a minute.
4. Add ginger garlic paste, onions and green peas. Stir-fry until onions turn translucent.
5. Add the rice and mix well.
6. Add salt, turmeric powder and dal.
7. Pour 2 cups of water and pressure cook until 1 whistle.
8. Heat a little ghee in a frying pan.
9. Fry the cashewnuts.
10. Garnish the khichdi with the fried cashewnuts.
11. Serve.
