Frequently Asked Questions about Salt and Pepper Squid

Can I use frozen squid for Salt and Pepper Squid?

Yes, you can use frozen squid for this recipe. However, it’s best to thaw it completely before cooking to ensure even cooking and a tender texture. Pat the squid dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture before coating it in the batter. Fresh squid is ideal for the best flavour and texture, but frozen squid can still yield delicious results.

How can I make the Salt and Pepper Squid extra crispy?

To achieve extra crispy Salt and Pepper Squid, there are a few essential tips:

  1. Make sure the squid is dry before coating it in the batter. Excess moisture can result in a less crispy texture.
  2. Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to ensure quick and crispy frying.
  3. Try using cornstarch in the batter for an extra crispy coating.

Cornstarch helps create a light and crispy texture when fried.

Can I make a dipping sauce to accompany the Salt and Pepper Squid?

Salt and Pepper Squid pairs well with various dipping sauces. One popular option is a tangy and spicy dipping sauce made with soy sauce, vinegar, chilli flakes, and a touch of honey or sugar for balance. Another option is a creamy garlic aioli or a zesty lemon mayo. These sauces complement the flavours of the squid and add an extra dimension of taste. Experiment with different dipping spices to find your favourite combination.

What are some suitable side dishes to serve with Salt and Pepper Squid?

Salt and Pepper Squid is often served as a delicious appetizer or main course. You can create a complete meal by pairing it with some complementary side dishes. Consider doing it with steamed or fried rice for a satisfying and filling meal. A fresh green salad with a tangy vinaigrette can provide a refreshing contrast to the crispy squid. Stir-fried vegetables, such as bok choy or snap peas, can add vibrant colours and textures to the plate.

Can I use this seasoning and cooking technique for other seafood?

The seasoning and cooking technique used in Salt and Pepper Squid can also be applied to other seafood. Prawns, shrimp, or fish fillets can be prepared similarly to create a tasty and crispy dish. Consider trying Salt and Pepper Prawns or Salt and Pepper Fish using the same seasoning and frying method.
