Chettinad Fish Fry is a traditional dish from the southern part of India. It is made from fish and spices and has a very unique taste.

The Chettinad region in Tamil Nadu, India, is the birthplace of this dish. Traditionally the spices used in this dish are hand ground to perfection and cooked with oil. The fish used in this recipe is usually pomfret, but can also be other varieties .

Chettinad Fish Fry

A flavorful fish fry recipe that originated in Chettinad, Tamil Nadu, India.

Ingredients

  • 1 Fish Fillet preferably pomfret (about 500 g)
  • 1 Sambar Onion(Shallot) peeled
  • a pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • few Curry Leaves
  • as per taste Salt
  • 1 to 2 tsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 to 2 tsp Rice Flour optional

For the masala:

  • 1/4 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Saunf
  • 1/2 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • 1/4 Black Peppercorns
  • 3 Dry Red Chillies
  • 1/4 tsp Salt optional
  • a pinch Turmeric Powder

Instructions

  • Wash the fillet well.
  • Rub the turmeric powder and salt all over.
  • Keep aside for a minute or two.
  • Wash again and keep aside.
  • Dry the masala ingredients (except salt) for 15 seconds and grind to a fine powder.
  • Add salt and mix well.
  • Grind the onion and ginger garlic paste to a smooth mixture.
  • Add salt, curry leaves, rice flour and ground masala powder to the paste.
  • Mix well and rub this all over the fillet.
  • Keep aside to marinate for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a shallow frying pan.
  • Fry the marinated fish until golden brown and crisp.
  • Remove and drain excess oil.
  • Serve warm with lemon wedges and onion rings.

What a yummy recipe. My 8 years old boy liked this fish fry. I prepared this recipe with seer fish(vanjaram). Guys you have a try with this recipe.
