Jeera rice is a popular Indian dish that is made from rice, cumin seeds and other spices. The recipe varies according to the region, family and personal preferences. It can be eaten with any curry or any kind of vegetable preparation.
Jeera Rice is popular in Northern India especially in Punjab region where it is eaten with curries like butter chicken or dal makhani.
Jeera Rice
Ingredients
- 1 cup Basmati / Fragrant Rice
- 2 cups Water
- 1 tbsp Jeera
- 2 tbsp Ghee
- 1/2 cup Sliced Onions
- 2 Green Chillies slit vertically
- as per taste Salt
Instructions
- Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes. Drain the water and keep aside.
- Heat ghee in a pressure cooker on a medium flame.
- Add the Jeera, chillies and sliced onions and saute for 1-2 min.
- Add the rice and mix well. Now add the 2 cups of water and salt as per taste.
- Allow this to boil at high heat. Keep it covered, though not fully closed.
- After you see the rice cooked to nearly 75%, close the lid with the whistle and reduce the flame to the lowest.
- Allow it to cook this way for 9-10 minutes. Don't wait for a steam whistle.
- Turn off the flame and let it rest till all the steam has reduced.
- Open and fluff the rice with a fork.
- Serve hot with any side dish of your choice.
