Puliyodharai is a popular South Indian dish made with tamarind paste, rice and spices. Commonly known as South Indian tamarind rice, it is a staple dish across many households and is often given as a prasadam in many Hindu temples.

Commonly served during lunch and during weddings, this dish is ideal for any time. You can use any leftover rice to make this recipe and can be packed for school or office lunch or any picnic trips.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rice cooked
  • 2 tbsp Bengal Gram Dal
  • 2 to 3 tsp Tamarind Paste store-bought
  • 2 Dry Red Chillies small
  • a pinch Asafoetida Powder -
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • few Curry Leaves
  • handful Roasted Peanuts
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • as per taste Salt

Optional

  • 1 tsp Jaggery powdered

Instructions

  • Pressure cook the rice and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan over medium flame.
  • Add the curry leaves, red chillies, asafoetida powder, mustard seeds, urad dal and bengal gram dal.
  • Fry until the dals are golden brown and mustard seeds start to pop.
  • Add the tamarind paste and 2 to 3 tblsp of warm water.
  • Add salt and turmeric powder.
  • Mix well until evenly mixed together.
  • Add jaggery powder if using and mix well.
  • When the mixture starts to bubble, add the rice and mix well.
  • Add roasted peanuts and mix again.
  • Serve.
