Ingredients:
Rice – 1/2 cup
Masoor Dal – 1/2 cup
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
Ghee – 2 tblsp
Tomatoes – 2 medium sized, finely chopped
Curry Leaves – 4 to 5 sprigs
Curry Masala – 1 tblsp
Sugar – 1/2 tsp
Salt – 1 tsp or to taste
Method:
1. Wash rice and dal.
2. Soak in water for 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Heat ghee in a heavy based pan over moderate heat.
4. Sprinkle in cumin seeds, and when they splutter, add tomatoes, curry leaves, curry masala and sugar.
5. Stir for 5 minutes till tomatoes are well cooked.
6. Drain rice and dal.
7. Add to pan with salt.
8. Stir till rice turns translucent.
9. Mix in 2 cups of water.
10. Cover the pan with a lid and steam cook for 10 to 15 minutes till water is absorbed and rice and dal are tender.
11. Remove pan from heat.
12. Leave covered for 5 minutes.
13. Serve.
