Murukku is an appetizer and crunchy snack. It was either originated in South India or in some other parts of India and Sri Lanka. The name of this dish has come from the Tamil word ‘twisted’ and it refers to the shape (coiled or spiral) of this dish. Murukku is especially popular in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. This crispy snack is made of rice flour and urad dal flour.

The murukulu can be the center of attraction in any party or special occasion. It proves to be a good starter as well. You can make this snack at your home easily but for that, you will need some special ingredients.

Let us have a look at the list of the ingredients. To make this delicious snack you will need besan flour, ghee or oil as per your choice, rice flour, cumin powder, red chili powder, white sesame seeds, asafoetida (or Hing), murukku press and salt as per your taste.

The murukulu contains carbohydrates, proteins, and some saturated fats as well. In short, if we go through the ingredients, we will find some benefits in each one of them. For example, ghee promotes a healthy weight loss and contains vitamins, cumin powder helps in reducing blood pressure and maintains proper digestion, asafoetida powder keeps the gastric problems away.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Besan Flour
  • 3 cups Ghee or Oil for frying
  • 4 cups Rice Flour
  • 4 tsp Cumin Powder
  • as per taste Salt
  • as per taste Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 cup White Sesame Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Asafoetida

Instructions

  • Fry besan flour in a little oil.
  • Mix with rice flour, cumin, salt, chilli powder, sesame seeds and asafoetida.
  • Add water to make a stiff batter.
  • Using the murukku press, make shapes in hot oil and deep fry till brown and crisp.
  • Remove and drain.
  • These will stay good if stored in an air tight container.

Notes

You will need a standard murukku press.
