How to use the calculator

  1. Choose the rice variety you are cooking.
  2. Select the cooking method and enter the rice quantity.
  3. Choose the soaking time and the texture you prefer.

A covered pot loses some water through evaporation, while a pressure cooker usually retains more moisture. A rice cooker manages heat and steam differently depending on the model. The excess-water method works differently again because the rice cooks in plenty of water and you drain the remainder. For that reason, the calculator does not apply one universal ratio across all methods.

Soaking also matters. Rice that has already absorbed water before cooking generally needs a little less liquid in the pot. The calculator makes a modest adjustment for 15, 30 and 60 minute soaking periods. Firmer or softer texture preferences make another small adjustment.

Treat the result as a starting point rather than an exact rule. Rice age, milling, rinsing, brand, pot width, heat level and resting time can all change the final texture. Once you find a ratio that works well with a particular rice and cooker, keep that personal adjustment for future batches.

Is one cup of rice to two cups of water always correct?

No. Some white rice varieties need less, while brown, parboiled and red rice often need more. The cooking method also changes how much water is lost.

Why does open boiling use much more water?

Can I use the result for biryani?

Use caution. Many biryani methods partially cook rice in excess water, while one-pot methods also receive moisture from meat, vegetables and curd. Follow the specific biryani recipe for the final liquid quantity.

Does a rice cooker always use the same ratio?

No. Rice cookers differ by model and programme. Use the result as a starting point and adjust after seeing how your cooker handles that rice.
