Planning food for a party becomes harder when the menu changes. An Indian buffet with rice, bread, curries and dal needs a different calculation from a pizza night, pasta dinner or barbecue. This calculator lets you build the menu you actually intend to serve instead of assuming every party follows the same format.
Party Food Quantity Calculator
Estimate food quantities for a party based on guest mix, menu style, selected dishes, and portion preference.
Suggested quantities
What does this tool do?
- Plans quantities for Indian buffets, biryani meals, pizza parties, pasta parties, grills, snacks, brunches and mixed buffets.
- Lets you create a custom menu when the preset party styles do not fit.
- Accounts separately for adults and children.
- Offers light, standard and generous portion levels.
- Includes starters, chaat, pizza, pasta, noodles, sandwiches, rice, breads, curries, dal, grilled foods, sides, desserts and drinks.
- Reduces individual main-dish quantities when several mains compete on the same buffet.
How to use the calculator
- Enter the number of adults and children attending.
- Choose the party or meal style that comes closest to your plan.
- Select light, standard or generous portions.
- Tick or untick individual food categories to match your menu.
- Enter the number of starter or curry varieties where relevant.
- Calculate the quantities and adjust the result for your guests.
The calculator uses adult-equivalent portions as a planning base, with children counted as smaller servings. It also considers menu competition. If pizza is the only main dish, each person needs more pizza than they would at a mixed buffet containing starters, pasta, grilled food, salad and dessert. The same principle applies to rice, breads, curries and dal.
The figures are practical estimates rather than catering standards. Teenagers, long events, alcohol, repeated helpings, heavy starters and unusually popular dishes can all change consumption. Use the result to create a sensible shopping list, then add a small buffer to the foods your guests are most likely to want more of.
The calculation runs in your browser. Guest numbers and menu selections are not stored or transmitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this for a pizza party?
Yes. Select Pizza Party or add pizza to a custom menu. The calculator estimates slices and converts them into an approximate number of large eight-slice pizzas.
Does the calculator handle pasta parties?
Yes. It estimates dry pasta and sauce, and it reduces the pasta allowance when you serve other substantial mains alongside it.
Do I have to include rice and roti?
No. Every food category can be selected or removed. You can plan a menu with no Indian starches at all.
How are children counted?
Children are treated as smaller portions than adults. The exact amount still depends on their ages and appetites, so adjust when you know your guest group well.
What if I serve several main dishes?
The calculator reduces the allowance for each main as the number of competing mains increases. This helps avoid planning every dish as though it were the only food available.
Can I build my own party menu?
Yes. Choose Custom Menu and select any combination of the available food categories.
Are these catering-standard quantities?
No. They are planning estimates for home cooks and hosts. Large professional events should use the caterer’s own service and wastage assumptions.
Is my party information saved?
No. The tool calculates in your browser and does not store guest counts or menu selections.
