Knowing that a bag of rice costs ₹180 does not tell you what the rice in one recipe costs. You need to know how much came in the package and how much the recipe actually used. This calculator handles that calculation ingredient by ingredient, then totals the recipe and divides the result by the number of servings.

For each ingredient, enter the package size, package price and quantity used. The calculator supports compatible weight and volume units, so a 1 kg package can be compared with 350 g used in the recipe. It also supports count-based ingredients when both values use units.

Food Cost Calculator

Enter the package price and how much of each ingredient your recipe uses.

Ingredients

Waste % is optional. Leave it at 0% if you do not know it. Use it for trimming, peeling, bones, shells or other purchased weight that is not served.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the recipe name and number of servings.
  2. Choose your currency.
  3. Add each ingredient with its package size and price.
  4. Enter how much of that package the recipe uses.
  5. Leave Waste at 0% unless you have a reasonable estimate for trimming, peeling, bones, shells or other unusable purchased weight.
  6. Add optional recipe costs such as packaging or garnish if they matter to your calculation.
  7. Add a markup percentage only if you want a simple selling-price estimate.
  8. Calculate the recipe total and cost per serving.

Waste percentage is optional because many home cooks will not know it. For rice, flour, milk, oil and similar ingredients, 0% is usually the sensible starting point. The field becomes more useful for ingredients where a meaningful portion is discarded before serving.

The markup output is a simple arithmetic estimate. A food business may also need to account for labour, utilities, rent, delivery commissions, taxes, spoilage and other overheads before setting a final price.

The calculator runs in your browser and does not save the ingredient names, prices or recipe details you enter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does package size mean?

It is the quantity you purchased for the listed package price, such as 1 kg of rice or 500 ml of cream.

What if the package is in kilograms but my recipe uses grams?

The calculator converts compatible weight units automatically.

Do I need to enter a waste percentage?

No. Leave it at 0% when you do not know it or when the ingredient is used almost completely.

What does waste percentage change?

It reduces the usable amount of the purchased package, which increases the effective cost of the quantity served.

Can I calculate cost per serving?

Yes. Enter the number of servings and the calculator divides the recipe total by that number.

Can I add packaging or other costs?

Yes. Use Other recipe costs for expenses you want included beyond the ingredient rows.

Is the selling price a complete business pricing model?

No. It only applies the markup percentage you enter to the calculated recipe cost.

Is my recipe data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the plugin does not save your entries.
