Aval Bisi Bela Bath
Aval (Poha / Beaten Rice) – 1 cup (hard variety)
Moong Dal – 1/2 cup
White Pumpkin – 1/2 cup, peeled, chopped
Carrot – 1
Capsicum – 1/2 cup, chopped
Green Peas – 1/2 cup, shelled
Chow Chow (Chayote) – 1/2 cup, chopped
Onion – 1, finely chopped
Bengal Gram Dal – 1 tsp
Urad Dal – 1 tsp
Dry Red Chillies – 4
Coriander Seeds – 2 tsp
Black Peppercorns – 1/4 tsp
Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Tamarind Extract – 1 cup
Turmeric Powder – a pinch
Asafoetida Powder – a pinch
Oil – 2 tsp
Salt as per taste
Curry Leaves


1. Wash and soak the aval for 10 minutes.
2. Heat little oil in a pan.
3. Fry the dals, red chillies, coriander seeds, peppercorns and fenugreek seeds till golden.
4. Then grind them to a fine powder.
5. Combine all the vegetables, except onion and capsicum, with moong dal.
6. Add turmeric powder and cook till done.
7. Add tamarind extract, salt and asafoetida powder.
8. Bring to a boil.
9. Saute the onions and capsicum separately and add to the pan.
10. Squeeze out any extra water and add the poha.
11. Stir to mix well and simmer over low flame for 10 minutes.
12. Fry the mustard seeds and curry leaves.
13. Pour over the bisi bela bath and serve hot.
