Ullipaya Sambar (Small Onion Sambar) Recipe

Ingredients:
Toor Dal – 500 gms
Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp
Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
Garlic – 10 cloves
Tamarind Pulp – 1 cup
Oil – 3 to 4 tblsp
Ghee – 2 tsp
Cumin Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Urad Dal – 1/2 tsp
Curry Leaves – few
Small Onions (Sambar Onions) – 500 gms
Green Chillies – 3 to 4
Tomatoes – 3 to 4, chopped
Sambar Powder – 6 to 8 tsp
Salt as per taste
Coriander Leaves – 1/2 cup, chopped
Red Chilli Powder – 2 tsp

Method:
1. Soak the toor dal for 30 minutes.
2. Boil till soft with 3 to 4 cups of water in a pressure cooker with turmeric, asafoetida and 4 cloves of garlic.
3. Heat oil in a pan.
4. Fry cumin, mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves till mustard seeds splutter.
5. Add onions, green chillies and the remaining garlic.
6. When the onions become soft, add tomatoes and fry on low heat for 5 minutes.
7. Add to the cooked dal with sambar powder.
8. Add tamarind pulp and simmer for a few minutes.
9. Add salt and chopped coriander leaves.
10. Serve hot with rice.
