Bisi Bele Huli Anna (Spicy Sambar Rice)


Rice – 1 cup
Red Gram Dal – 1 cup
Tamarind – lime sized ball
Sambar Onions – 1/2 cup, small, peeled
Capsicum – 1, diced fine
Small Brinjal – 1, diced fine
Green Peas – 2 tblsp, shelled (optional)
Potato – 1, diced fine
Salt to taste
Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
Ghee – 6 tblsp
Coriander Leaves – small bunch, chopped for garnishing

Spice Paste:
Oil – 4 tsp
Dry Red Chillies – 12 to 14
Coriander Seeds – 3 tblsp
Bengal Gram Dal – 3 tsp
Cinnamon – 1 inch stick
Poppy Seeds – 1 1/2 tsp
Cloves – 4
Fenugreek Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Fresh Coconut – 1/2, grated
Asafoetida Powder – 1 tsp

Spice Powder:
Bengal Gram Dal – 3 tblsp, fried
Poppy Seeds – 1 1/2 tsp
Rice – 3 tsp

1. Pressure cook the rice and dal in 4 cups of water and leave it in the pressure cooker to keep it warm.
2. Soak the tamarind in 2 cups water, extract the juice and set aside.
3. Fry all the ingredients for the spice paste in 4 tsp oil and grind to a fine paste using very little water.
4. Dry roast all the ingredients for the spice powder and grind fine.
5. Heat 2 tblsp oil in a heavy bottomed pan and add all the ingredients for tempering.
6. When the mustard seeds splutter, add the onions and fry for a couple of minutes.
7. Add the rest of the vegetables and fry till the vegetables are partly cooked.
8. Mix in the tamarind juice, salt and turmeric powder and cook till the vegetables are tender.
9. Add the spice paste to the vegetables and cook for a couple of minutes.
10. Gradually stir in the cooked rice and dal, ensuring no lumps are formed.
11. Simmer on low heat. Add 6 tblsp ghee and stir gently till well blended.
12. Mix in the spice powder and remove from the heat.
13. Garnish wih chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.

it is a spicy sambar rice. Everyone in my home liked it.It came out very nicely.
