Cooking time: 25 – 30 mins.
Ingredients
1 cup split black gram dal (urad dal)
1 large onion (chopped)
1 small ginger piece (chopped)
3 – 4 garlic flakes (chopped)
2 – 3 green chillies (chopped)
1 tsp ghee
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1/2 tsp coriander powder (dhania powder)
1/4 tsp garam masala powder
a pinch of asafoetida (heeng)
1 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 cups of water
To garnish chopped green coriander
Salt, pepper, red chilli powder (to taste)
Method
1. Wash and soak dal for 20 mins. in cups of water. Drain the water.
2. In a microwave safe bowl add ghee and microwave at 100% power for 30 secs.
3. Add all the spices and microwave for 1 min. at 100% power.
4. Add chopped onion, ginger, garlic, chillies and microwave for 2 mins. at 100% power.
5. Now add soaked dal and 2 cups of water. Microwave (covered) for 12 mins. at 100% power and then at 60% power for 10 – 11 mins. Stir in between.
6. Allow to stand for 5 mins. Add green coriander and lemon juice.
7. Serve hot with roti / paranthas / naan.
