Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Toovar Dal
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt as per taste
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Lime Juice
  • 2 tbsp Coriander Leaves (finely chopped)

Grind to a smooth paste:

  • 1/2 cup Mint Leaves
  • 2 Green Chillies (chopped)
  • 1 1/2 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Black Peppercorns
  • 3/4 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • Water (little)

For Tempering:

  • 2 tsp Ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Asafoetida Powder
  • 1 Dry Red Chilli (halved)
  • Curry Leaves (few)

Instructions

  • Wash the dal and drain.
  • Pressure cook with turmeric powder and 1 cup of water for 5 minutes.
  • Transfer it to a heavy kadai.
  • Add 2 cups of water and whisk well.
  • Add the mint paste and salt.
  • Place pan over high heat and bring to boil.
  • Add more water if required.
  • Lower heat and simmer till rasam froths up.
  • Remove from heat and add lime juice.
  • Heat ghee for tempering over moderate heat.
  • Add the tempering ingredients and fry.
  • When mustard seeds start spluttering, add it to the rasam.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with plain rice.
