Shorshe Maach (Fish Cooked in Mustard)

Shorshe Maach
Ingredients:
Fish (Rohu) – 375 gms, cut into pieces, cleaned
Onion – 1/4 to 1/2 cup, chopped
Poppy Seeds – 1/2 tblsp
Yellow Mustard Seeds – 3/4 tblsp
Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
Coconut – 2 to 3 one inch pieces, diced
Ginger – 1/2 inch piece
Garlic – 3 cloves
Green Chillies – 2, slit lengthwise
Coriander Powder – 1 tsp
Cumin Powder – 1 tsp
Red Chilli Powder – 3/4 tsp
Oil – 2 to 3 tblsp
Lemon Juice – 4 to 5 tblsp
Coriander Leaves – handful, chopped
Salt as per taste

Method:
1. Sprinkle salt on the fish pieces and keep aside for 15 minutes to marinate.
2. Then rinse the fish and keep aside in a plate.
3. Heat a pan over low heat.
4. Fry the poppy seeds for a minute.
5. Remove the poppy seeds, soak in little water for 10 minutes.
6. Grind the poppy seeds with 1/4 cup of water and all the other ingredients except lemon juice, coriander leaves and oil.
7. Add some salt and grind to a fine paste.
8. Heat oil in a pan over moderate flame.
9. Fry the ground masala paste for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring all the time and adding a little water if required.
10. Add the lemon juice and 1 cup of water.
11. Simmer over low heat for 3 minutes and add the fish pieces.
12. Cook until done.
13. Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with coriander leaves.
14. Serve hot.
