Kaalan Recipe
Ingredients:
Raw Banana - 1 cup, diced
Green Chillies - 6, slit
Chilli Powder - 1/2 tssp
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Coconut - 1 cup, grated
Cumin Seeds - 1/4 tsp
Curd - 4 cups, lightly beaten
For the Seasoning:
Refined Vegetable Oil - 2 tblsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Fenugreek Seeds - 1/8 tsp
Dry Red Chillies - 3, halved
Curry Leaves - few
Method:
1. Cook the banana pieces in a cup of water, with green chillies, chilli powder and turmeric powder.
2. Add salt to taste.
3. Grind grated coconut and cumin seeds to a fine paste.
4. Add this paste to the cooked banana.
5. Mix well and allow to boil once.
6. Lower the heat and add the beaten curd at once, stirring all the time.
7. Take care it does not curdle. Remove from ifre.
8. Heat another pan with 2 tblsp oil.
9. Splutter mustard seeds, add fenugreek seeds, red chillies and curry leaves and fry lightly.
10. Pour over the curry.
11. Serve hot.
Tip: Kalan can also be made with pineapple instead of banana.
