Bengali Cholar Dal Recipe

Cooking time: 30 mins.
Ingredients
For Dal:
1 cup chana dal
4 cups of water

For Tempering:
1 tbsp oil
1 tbsp cumin seeds (jeera)
½ tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp amchoor
2 dry red chillies
½ cup grated coconut
2 bay leaves (tej patta)
a pinch of asafoetida (heeng)
3 – 4 raisins (kishmish) (optional)
Salt and black pepper powder (to taste)

Method
1. Wash and soak dal for ½ an hour. Drain the excess water.
2. In a big microwave safe bowl mix 4 cups of water, soaked dal, salt and turmeric powder.
3. Cover and boil, at 100% power for 15 mins. and then microwave covered at 60% power for 10 mins. Stir in between.
4. In another microwave safe bowl heat oil at 100% power for 30 secs.
5. Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, bay leaves, red chillies and grated coconut. And microwave at 100% power for 1:30 mins.
6. Mix it with the boiled dal. Add sugar, salt, raisins and amchoor. Microwave covered at 100% power for 3 mins.
7. Allow to stand for 5 mins. Serve hot with boiled rice and chutney.
